Why some stories don’t need to be complicated to stay with you.
There’s something incredibly comforting about stories that don’t ask too much of you.
Archie comics have always been that for me.
I grew up reading Archie Double Digests, Jughead Double Digests, Betty & Veronica digests. Piles of them. Dog-eared, shared, reread. You could open one at any page and immediately slip into Riverdale. No backstory needed. No emotional preparation required. Just familiar faces, simple humour, and a guaranteed good time.
That was the magic.
The stories were short, punchy, and funny in a way that didn’t try too hard. Archie messing things up. Jughead avoiding responsibility and chasing food. Betty and Veronica locked in their eternal dance of rivalry and friendship. Reggie being… Reggie. It was light, playful, and never took itself too seriously.
And that’s exactly why it worked.
Archie comics were never about grand plotlines or dramatic arcs. They were about everyday chaos. Crushes. Misunderstandings. School life. Friendships. Petty drama that always reset by the next story. You laughed, turned the page, and moved on.
They were easy laughs. Honest laughs. The kind you didn’t have to earn.
What’s fascinating is how long these characters have stayed relevant. Archie has existed for generations, yet somehow keeps finding ways to adapt. Over the years, Riverdale has slowly evolved to reflect the world around it. The newer storylines have made space for more diversity, more inclusivity, and more representation. Characters have been reimagined. Relationships expanded. LGBTQ+ identities acknowledged and embraced. Non-white characters given more visibility and voice.
It hasn’t always been perfect, but the effort matters.
There’s something quietly powerful about taking such an old, familiar universe and letting it grow with the times instead of freezing it in nostalgia. Archie didn’t disappear. It adjusted. It listened. It evolved.
And yet, at its core, it stayed the same.
The humour is still simple. The jokes still land quickly. The comfort is still there. You can still pick up a comic after a long day, flip through a few pages, and feel lighter without even realising it.
I’ll admit, I’ve never actually watched Riverdale, the TV show. I know it takes the characters in a very different, darker direction. I’m intrigued though. Maybe one day I’ll finally watch it and share my thoughts here. Let’s see.
I think that’s why Archie comics have endured.
They don’t demand attention. They offer relief.
They remind you that not every story has to change your life to be meaningful. Some stories are just there to keep you company. To make you smile. To give your brain a break.
And honestly, that’s a kind of magic we don’t talk about enough.
If you’ve never read them, or if you’re feeling nostalgic and want to revisit Riverdale, you can find the comics here*.
